The reason why I chose to teach students at Ka'ala elementary school is because many of them live in poverty.
-
It's a very poor area where some kids live with grandparents because the parents can't take care of them. Some kids don't even get to see their parents.
-
Some kids don't have a "home" of their own and have to stay at a relative's house.
-
Many kids have "reduced free lunch" because they can't buy lunch.
-
Some of kids don't even get fruits and vegetables at home, only in their school lunches.
-
-
Many of the students live in really poor circumstances, so I decided to teach second graders how to garden, and make it a part of their lives so they can have a food source to turn to when the guardians can't buy groceries or fast foods.
-
My sister and I, wanted them to have a garden of their own and learn how to take care of one, so we gave the teacher all the supplies, and started their very own class garden.
-
We got the kids feedback, and they all agreed on lettuce, carrots, and bell peppers. We gave them the seeds and taught them how to put it in the soil, and what to do.
- When the plants got to a certain point where it needs to be transplanted, the kids took it home. We planted enough that each student is taking each plant home.
-
-
Kokua Hawaii Foundation said "we believe our keiki are the seeds of change to preserving and protecting our beautiful Islands."
-
I love that phrase. Teach the next generation how to garden and protect the environment, the kids make the change.
-
If the kids start from a young age how to garden, then that skill is going to carry with them for a long time.
-
When you teach kids how to garden, they take it to their families, and then the family creates a garden or takes it under consideration to do so. When the kids learns something the family learns it as well.
