Ancient Gardening

  • Gardening was used for food and planting herbs for medicines.
  • When industrialization was introduced and man became more civilized, gardens was used more for decoration than food.
  • At the time, the aristocrats had slaves, and made the slaves take care of the garden.

18th Century Gardening

  • Many people fought for "natural" gardening that plants foods and herbs, instead of decoration use.
  • Though the people fought for it, gardens were still being used for decorations.
  • Lancelot Brown was the most famous gardener at the time who adopted a informal style of gardening.
  • Informal gardening style is designed with a few straight lines and more curve lines. Inspiration from natural habits, and is also known as a "naturalistic garden."

  • In England 1725, an organization called "Society of Gardeners" was created. London started creating public gardens.
  • In the 18th century, only the middle-class and upper class were able to have decorative gardens, the lower class had to use gardens for herbs and foods because they didn't have the time and money to grow decorative gardens.

19th Century Gardening

  • Gardeners began to build large greenhouses to give the plants both heat and light.
  • Well-trimmed lawns and flower beds became more popular.

  • Middle class grew in number and wealth.
  • Rock gardens also became very popular.

20th Century Gardening

  • By the end of the 19th century going into the 20th century many gardeners were influenced by arts and crafts movements.
  • Tired of the industrialization period, gardeners went back to the old ways where individuation could be found.
  • Many gardeners started creating their own styles, and had different views of what an old fashion garden would look like.
  • There was a new movement in architecture and gardening. The new movement is called "Modernism" where some gardeners refused to copy old styles of gardening, and started focusing on the present to create their gardens.
